A free dyslexia-friendly document checklist for teachers, SENCOs and school staff: 30 quick checks for type, spacing, layout, color, wording and file format, plus a plain-language rewrite sheet and a student reading preferences card.

What’s included (4 pages, PDF):

  1. Dyslexia-Friendly Document Checklist: thirty checks to tick off before you send, post or print a handout, letter, slide deck or web page
  2. Plain-Language Rewrite Sheet: a five-step rewrite routine, a before-and-after example and a table of everyday word swaps (utilize to use, commence to start, and so on)
  3. My Reading Preferences Card: two fill-in cards a student or employee can hand to a teacher or manager, listing the font, size, color, spacing and formats that work for them

Each sheet is also included as a separate file.

Sources: the checklist is based on the British Dyslexia Association Dyslexia Style Guide (2023) and the WCAG 2.2 accessibility success criteria, and was reviewed against its sources in October 2026.

How to use it: Put the checklist in a staff handbook or run it over a worksheet before printing. Use the reading preferences card in a learning support review or at the start of the year, so each student can tell teachers what helps.
