The Eduqas A Level Music Specification says:
“Learners are required to study six genres of Jazz between 1920 and 1960:

  • Ragtime
  • Dixieland
  • Early Jazz
  • Big Band (including Swing)
  • Bebop
  • Cool Jazz”

…adding that learners should study (amongst other things) “important composers/performers in the development of each genre” and “how jazz changed over time (eg how styles cross-fertilised)”.

However, given that exam extracts can come from any Jazz between 1920 and 1960, it makes sense to look at other styles of Jazz performed between 1920 and 1960, whilst also noting that much Jazz comfortably falls in between genres.

These shorter listening exercises form a brief introduction to six additional styles of Jazz, with questions that at all times focus on the music heard rather than anything style-specific.
