The aim of this lesson is to investigate how Elizabeth I approached the difficult issue of religion and evaluate why the Elizabethan Settlement became one of the most important decisions of her reign.
Students begin by exploring the religious divisions inherited from Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I, before examining why Elizabeth chose a calm, cautious and pragmatic approach to unite a divided country. They consider the challenges she faced on becoming Queen and why religion threatened both her authority and the stability of England.
Through a colour-coding activity, students identify and prioritise the greatest religious problems facing Elizabeth before analysing how the Elizabethan Settlement of 1559 attempted to satisfy both Catholics and Protestants. A text-mapping exercise helps students decode the key features of the Settlement, while guided enquiry questions encourage them to explain why Elizabeth made the decisions she did.
The lesson concludes with a sequencing activity, enabling students to reinforce their understanding of the Elizabethan Settlement and evaluate its significance in securing Elizabeth’s reign and restoring religious stability.
An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and develop a deeper understanding of one of the defining events of Elizabethan England.
