Energy Stores pt 2 - This 50-minute KS3 lesson continues learning on energy stores in a clear, structured, and SEN-friendly way. Created for students in KS3 in an SEN Secondary School.
Students build on prior knowledge through explicit teaching, scaffolded questioning, regular checking for understanding, retrieval practice, and visual worksheet-based activities.
Lesson Structure:
Starter – Retrieval Practice:
- Students recall the four energy stores learnt previously (chemical, kinetic, thermal, and nuclear) by identifying them from visual examples, helping to strengthen prior learning.
Explicit Teaching – New Energy Stores. Students are introduced to:
- Gravitational potential energy
- Elastic potential energy
- Electrical energy
- Magnetic energy
Each concept includes clear explanations, relatable real-world examples, and checking for understanding questions.
-
Task 1 – Identifying Energy Stores: Students identify the correct energy store shown in a series of images, applying their understanding of height, stretched objects, electrical charge, and magnetic forces.
-
Task 2 – Energy Store Colour Hunt: Students colour-code objects in a visual scene depending on the energy stores they contain, reinforcing recognition and classification skills.
-
Comparison Questions: Students compare examples (e.g. skydiver vs parked car, trampoline vs books, rollercoaster vs trampoline) to deepen understanding of how energy can be stored differently.
-
Plenary – Whiteboard Retrieval: Students identify the main energy store shown in an image as a final check for understanding.
Includes:
- Fully resourced PowerPoint
- Double-sided worksheet (first 2 slides – print double-sided)
- Answer slides included
- SEN-friendly scaffolded learning
