Phonics Treasure Hunt (Sounds: m, a, s, d, t)
This phonics treasure hunt is designed for Nursery and Reception (EYFS) children to practise recognising and matching the sounds m, a, s, d, t in a fun and engaging way.
Preparation:
Print and cut out the picture cards provided (there are six pictures for each sound).
Stick the pictures around the learning environment, both inside and outside, to encourage children to move and explore.
Print out the tally chart for each child (or group).
How to Play:
Children search for the pictures hidden around the room or outdoor space.
Each time they find a picture, they look at the initial sound and make a mark on their tally chart under the correct sound.
Continue until all pictures have been found.
Optional Extras:
Duplicate pictures to provide more opportunities for children to find each sound.
Enlarge pictures to make them easier to spot or use as a display.
Challenge children to say the sound out loud as they make their tally mark.
Curriculum Link:
This activity supports Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds, helping children to recognise, say and match initial sounds to words. It also encourages early mark-making and phonics exploration in line with the EYFS framework.
