This is a maths activity where the children describe themselves in numbers. This activity can be used with any class level as the four operations, plus fractions, decimals and percentages, can be used. Children choose some facts about themselves such as their age/shoe size/number of letters in their name/family, etc. They then create sums that give the answers to these facts. These sums can be written on to post-its and put onto an A4 page or can be written onto the sheets in this resource and made into larger A3 posters. They could also draw their own images for each fact and write the sum inside. For example, draw an outline of a shoe and write the sum for shoe size inside. This resource could also be printed out and made into a booklet titled, ‘Figure Me Out’. Younger classes could do 3-5 facts while older classes could do up to 12, and even include some extras of their own. This resource is great for differentiation as more able students can continue to add on more facts to their work. This could be used in September as a ‘Get to Know Me’ exercise, as a way of assessing the children’s knowledge and use of operations/fractions, for Maths Week in October instead of using the workbooks and also as part of an SPHE lesson about themselves, being unique or the similarities/differences between people. Children then have to guess who created what poster/booklet.
