First Reading Booklet Unit 1 Revision – 8 page reading booklets, similar in level to Pink Reading Band and designed as an inexpensive resource to be used as a follow-up to the corresponding ‘First Reading’ Revision powerpoint files – providing further practice, if necessary. Print as many as you need. They are intended to supplement phonics based reading books, not replace them, so you may want to ensure that children have been taken through the corresponding powerpoints and have practised the cloze procedure before sending the booklets home for further practice.
Print onto 2 sheets of A4 paper, fold and staple to make individual reading booklets. The aim is to encourage children to use further strategies to support segmenting and blending. The last page of each booklet shows relevant sight words, including words from previous titles.
Unit 1 uses a repetitive sentence structure to support prediction, with a mixture of decodeable and sight words. The powerpoints and booklets encourage children to cross check two sources of information – the context (illustration) and the letters on the page. In Unit 1, children are encouraged to look at the initial sound to help to predict the missing words.
