First Reading Booklets Unit 2: 12 eight-page reading booklets (at similar level to Red Reading Band) designed as an inexpensive resource to be used as a follow-up to the corresponding ‘First Reading’ powerpoint files, which practise strategies to support segmenting and blending. New ‘tricky’ sight words are added to each new booklet (2a to 2f), with a revision booklet for each one. Print as many as you need. They are intended to supplement phonics based reading books, not replace them, so you may want to ensure that children have been taken through the corresponding powerpoints and have practised the cloze procedure before sending the booklets home for further practice.
Print booklets onto 2 sheets of A4 paper, fold and staple. The last page of each booklet shows relevant sight words, including words from previous titles.
Unit 2 uses a repetitive sentence structure to support prediction (but with more variation than Unit 1), with a mixture of decodeable and sight words. The powerpoints and booklets encourage children to cross check two sources of information – the meaning (illustration) and the letters on the page. In Unit 2, children are encouraged to look at the initial sound to help to predict the missing words.
