This resource starts with two worksheets that enables students to work out the charges on ions of Groups 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 using the Periodic Table.

Once they have done this they will hopefully see the pattern between Group number and charge on the various ions. This will enable students to understand why elements in Group 1 have a 1+ charge etc.

Once they have completed the two tables (one for positive ions and one for negative ions) they can then proceed, with guidance, to deduce the formulae of the various ionic compounds. NOTE the students do not always realise that the ionic compounds they are being asked to work out the formulae for are only using the ions contained in the first two tables.
