Free Year 7 Shakespeare lesson: why did Shakespeare write Macbeth for King James I? Case file enquiry, evidence packs, verdict paragraph and quiz. KS3.
Start your Shakespeare unit with an enquiry that gets pupils thinking like historians. This is a complete, ready-to-teach 50-minute lesson that answers one question: why did Shakespeare write Macbeth, and why for a king?
WHAT YOU GET
- Lesson slide deck (9 slides) with learning objective, Do Now and key words
- Case File sheet for pupils to record their findings
- Evidence packs for teams to read and sort
- Shakespeare’s World map sheet
HOW THE LESSON RUNS
- Do Now and key words (monarchy, patron and more)
- Hook: a mock newspaper front page about the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. Pupils predict why this matters for a play about killing a king
- Teams read an evidence pack on one topic: Shakespeare’s life, his education, entertainment in his London, social class, England in 1603, religion and the Plot, kings and God, and crime and punishment
- Teams give short talks, and every pupil completes the full Case File
- Writing: pupils study a colour-coded model verdict paragraph, then write their own using evidence from their Case File, with sentence starters for support
- Quick quiz and exit pass: complete a timeline, with a stretch question for confident pupils
APPROACH
Pupils gather and use evidence, practise a clear written verdict, and meet the context behind Macbeth before reading a line. The context is taught through retrieval, modelling and writing, so it sticks.
