French Torture Tenses

I created the French sets in 2012 for my year 9s and 10s to help them automise their tenses. I adapted it from a daily maths challenge called Tables Torture that I had done with my KS2 pupils as a primary teacher a few years before.
This is how we tend to use them at my school. They are graded 1A (je), 1B,(nous), 1C (il/elle/on), 1D (tu) and 1E (ils/elles) for the first level in which I have taken 10 of the most common verbs, regular and irregular in the perfect, present and immediate future tenses.
Students do this once a week as a starter activity. They all start with 1A and have just 5 minutes to complete the sheet. I then hand out laminated answer booklets so they can mark their partner’s work - 1 point per correct sentence and total of 30 points. I tend to let mine move on to the next level the following week if they have got 27+ points. Other members of my department are more demanding! Once they have completed level 1, they can go on to level 2 - 2A &B - the same verbs in negative form, then 3A which include a new set of verbs, including modals.
Students like to groan when they remember it’s a Torture Tense day but I think they actually like doing it and achieving success within it. They always ask if they can take a photo of the answer sheet so they can memorise it and improve on their score next time. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
I’ve up-dated it a bit this year with the Quizlet and Blooket sets which are an effective and fun way of reinforcing, and make good home learning activities too.
