This LKS2 writing lesson teaches pupils how to use fronted adverbials effectively when writing to inform. Rather than simply identifying fronted adverbials, pupils explore how they can be used to organise information, guide the reader and vary sentence structures across a range of informative texts.
The resource includes explicit teaching slides for three different text types: newspaper reports, non-chronological reports and explanation texts. You will need to delete the examples which are not relevant. Pupils learn how fronted adverbials can be used to introduce important information about when, where and how something happens, whilst also helping readers navigate information more easily.
Throughout the lesson, pupils analyse examples, discuss the impact of overusing fronted adverbials and practise improving writing by selecting purposeful sentence openers. The resource also explores why some fronted adverbials are more suitable than others when writing to inform, helping pupils develop a greater understanding of audience and purpose.
With clear explanations, modelled examples and application activities throughout, this lesson helps pupils move beyond simply spotting fronted adverbials and begin using them as an effective tool to improve the quality of their informative writing.
