This resources uses a progression from Letters and Sounds, the framework for which underpins many validated phonics programmes, to outline all of the Grapheme-Phoneme-Correspondences (GPCs) and later spelling patterns taught to children between the beginning or the Reception year (EYFS) and the end of Year 2. It may be used directly with a child to help identify gaps in their GPC knowledge by asking them to read the sounds, or as an assessment tool when reviewing their writing. The author recommends a combination of both, depending on age and stage. If working with the screening tool directly with a child, it is recommended to print the screener on an A3 size and to record any specific errors on the sheet; for example, if a child read ‘ph’ as ‘th’ then the adult would write the incorrect grapheme.
Two versions are provided: one uses colours to help to identify alternative graphemes when reading left to write; one uses no colour, depending on the preference of the user.
