TES Description
The Boy at the Back of the Class Complete 20-Lesson English Scheme of Work | KS2 Years 5–6
A complete 20-lesson English scheme of work based on The Boy at the Back of the Class, ideal for Year 5, Year 6 and Upper KS2.
This bundle brings together both halves of the unit – Lessons 1–10 and Lessons 11–20 – giving you the complete teaching sequence in one resource. TES currently lists the bundle as containing these two packs, making this the full version rather than one half of the scheme.
The resources are designed to support pupils as they read and explore the novel while developing key reading, comprehension, vocabulary, inference and writing skills. The first half is explicitly structured as Lessons 1–10 of a 20-part teaching sequence, with the second pack providing Lessons 11–20.
Across the complete scheme, pupils can develop skills including:
reading comprehension
retrieval
inference
prediction
vocabulary development
character analysis
theme exploration
written responses
creative writing
discussion and reflection
evidence-based answers
independent learning
The unit is particularly well suited to a class study of The Boy at the Back of the Class, with opportunities to explore important themes such as friendship, kindness, empathy, refugees, belonging, inclusion, courage, prejudice and helping others.
The resources use a clear, visually structured format, making them particularly useful for mixed-attainment classes and pupils who benefit from accessible, manageable tasks. The individual Part 1 listing also describes the resources as suitable for SEN and SEND learners, intervention, homework and cover work.
What is included?
20 lessons in total
Part 1: Lessons / Worksheets 1–10
Part 2: Lessons / Worksheets 11–20
Together, these form the complete scheme of work, so teachers do not need to purchase the two halves separately.
The resources can be used for:
whole-class English teaching • class novel study • whole-class reading • reading comprehension • guided reading • independent work • literacy intervention • homework • cover lessons • SEN/SEND support
Suitable for:
Year 5 • Year 6 • Upper KS2 • KS2 English • Novel Study • Whole-Class Reading • Literacy
This is the best option for teachers who want to teach the complete novel as a structured unit, rather than purchasing Lessons 1–10 or Lessons 11–20 separately.
Please note: the novel itself is not included. Pupils will need access to The Boy at the Back of the Class where activities require reference to the text.
