Future Voices KS2 Reading Comprehension Pack
A substantial Upper KS2 reading comprehension resource containing 8 original texts designed to develop reading skills while encouraging pupils to think deeply about fairness, community, belonging, the environment, representation and young people making change.
Future Voices moves beyond traditional comprehension questions.
Pupils are encouraged to retrieve information, infer meaning, explore vocabulary, compare viewpoints, examine representation, justify opinions, discuss real-world issues and consider how reading can shape their own ideas.
The pack is designed primarily for Years 5 and 6, but could also be used with confident Year 4 readers or lower-attaining KS3 pupils.
8 original reading units are included:
-
The Bench Nobody Used
Theme: Community & Belonging
A new pupil discovers why some children need quieter spaces and how a simple playground bench can become somewhere pupils feel they belong. -
The Last Tree on Willow Street
Theme: Environment & Responsibility
Pupils investigate a council proposal to remove an old tree for additional parking and discover that there are valid arguments on both sides. -
The Missing Team Photograph
Theme: Fairness & Representation
Maya notices that her school’s sports display celebrates almost entirely football and begins questioning whose achievements are being noticed — and whose are being overlooked. -
The Saturday Kitchen
Theme: Community & Poverty
A multi-perspective text explores a community kitchen and considers dignity, volunteering, contribution and what really makes a community strong. -
The New Girl’s Map
Theme: Belonging & Perspective
A pupil creates a very different kind of map showing the ordinary places that help her feel safe, connected and at home. -
One Bottle at a Time
Theme: Young People Making Change
Pupils notice plastic waste at school, collect evidence, conduct a survey and develop a realistic proposal for change. -
The Rule That Wasn’t Fair
Theme: Fairness, Equality & Equity
A classroom rule appears equal because everyone receives exactly the same treatment — but pupils begin to question whether equal always means fair. -
The Letter Nobody Expected
Theme: Voice & Change
A pupil writes to the local council about an inaccessible playground and discovers that creating change can involve consultation, evidence, planning and persistence.
Each unit follows a clear and consistent structure, making the pack easy to use across a reading sequence.
