This Garden Centre Role Play Pack is part of the Little Writers Through Play series, designed to support early writing through meaningful, child-led experiences in Nursery and Reception.

Children can take on roles such as gardener, shop assistant or customer, exploring a calm, real-life environment where communication, reading and writing develop naturally through play.

A different approach to early writing

This resource is based on first-hand classroom experience of using both adult-led writing tasks and play-based approaches.

While adult-led activities can have their place, I have found that when writing is introduced through play, children are often more engaged, more confident and more willing to have a go.

Within the garden centre, children begin to see the purpose of writing — creating labels, making lists, writing signs or recording their ideas — because it supports their play.

This approach helps to reduce pressure, allowing children to explore writing at their own pace, without fear of getting things wrong.
