A fully resourced, enquiry-led GCSE History lesson exploring why Mikhail Gorbachev was so different from the Soviet leaders who came before him. Students examine the weaknesses of the USSR’s ageing leadership and investigate how Gorbachev’s personality, openness and willingness to embrace change challenged decades of established Soviet practices.
The lesson includes:
A thought-provoking Register Task using Gorbachev’s TIME magazine cover to challenge students’ expectations of Soviet leadership
An engaging 18-card sorting activity examining the health, attitudes and leadership styles of Brezhnev, Andropov and Chernenko
A one-word judgement task encouraging students to evaluate the characteristics and limitations of Gorbachev’s predecessors
An immersive ten-character quotation match-up exploring how different members of Soviet society might have reacted to Gorbachev’s arrival
A follow-up sorting task evaluating whether these fictional Soviet characters were strongly supportive, cautiously hopeful or suspicious of Gorbachev
A newspaper headline plenary challenging students to identify and justify what made Gorbachev different from earlier Soviet leaders
All worksheets, slide materials, and full slide-by-slide teacher notes are included, designed for immediate classroom use.
Designed for Edexcel GCSE History: Superpower Relations and the Cold War, 1941–91, but easily adaptable for other GCSE specifications covering this topic.
The lesson develops key disciplinary skills including historical interpretation, analysis, evaluation and supported judgement, while reinforcing understanding of Soviet leadership, the problems facing the USSR by 1985 and Gorbachev’s distinctive approach to change.
