A fully resourced, enquiry-led GCSE English Literature lesson exploring how Shakespeare presents masculinity in Macbeth. Students investigate how ideas about manhood influence Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Macduff, considering whether masculinity itself is dangerous or whether the danger lies in rigid expectations about what it means to be a man.
The lesson includes:
• A low-stakes Register Task introducing Lady Macbeth’s challenge to Macbeth’s masculinity
• A What Would You Do? scenario exploring the pressure to prove masculinity through violence
• A What Really Happened? reveal examining how Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth’s ideas about manhood
• A quotation task exploring contrasting ideas of violence, courage and emotion
• A Macbeth and Macduff comparison exploring different models of masculinity
• A continuum task evaluating when ideas about masculinity become dangerous
• A final judgement answering “Does Shakespeare present masculinity as dangerous?”
All slide materials and full slide-by-slide teacher notes are included, designed for immediate classroom use.
Suitable for GCSE English Literature study of Macbeth and adaptable for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas.
The lesson develops key analytical skills including quotation analysis, comparison, interpretation, evaluation and supported judgement, while reinforcing understanding of masculinity, violence, courage, emotion, manipulation and gender expectations in Macbeth.
