The planning address all areas of the EYFS curriculum and is designed to truly allow Nursery and Reception children ‘to become geographers’.

The children will learn about one continent per week (two in the final, sixth week), as well as transport associated to each continent. There are writing stimulus, reading core texts (all with YouTube links if needed), linked maths projects, art/design activities, and speaking and listening opportunities in each week, including prompts to boost early vocabulary, e.g. videos, virtual tours and County of the Day for additional learning. The weekly themes also include RE links, songs and vocabulary ‘word of the day’, as well as a wellbeing activity to support mental health and/or support emotional regulation. Additional resources are included where needed, e.g. a tens frame on a London bus for the Europe topic.

The topic was designed for ‘lockdown’ and school closure, and was used while some ‘key worker’ children were in school and some were at home. I plan on using it with a full class in school next year.
