This document contains 10 images of real-life German signs, along with a standard worksheet to accompany each image. Students work in pairs or groups to use the visual cues in each sign, as well as familiar or similar words on the signs, to infer the probable meaning of each sign, and be able to translate words and phrases on the sign.
This activity is suitable for beginning learners of German and requires little or no prior knowledge. It is useful as a lesson introducing how context can be used to make meaning, even when aspects remain unknown.
The signs are of differing complexity, allowing for differentiation in the classroom.
