This complete unit of work is built around selected episodes of Goosebumps and has been designed for use in Scottish secondary English and Literacy classrooms. The pack supports pupils in developing active listening, comprehension and creative writing skills through a highly scaffolded and engaging sequence of learning.

The unit moves pupils from watching and responding to a range of Goosebumps stories, through recognising the conventions and structures of effective horror writing, and ultimately into planning and writing their own complete story. The materials are particularly effective with reluctant writers and lower-literacy classes, offering substantial visual and written scaffolding while still allowing pupils to make their own creative choices.

What’s included:

  1. A fully illustrated Active Listening Workbook covering eight Goosebumps stories
  2. Structured comprehension questions to maintain focus and check understanding during viewing
  3. Follow-up tasks developing prediction, explanation, evaluation and imaginative response
  4. An extended writing-in-role task based on Werewolf Skin
  5. Activities helping pupils recognise the recurring features and structure of Goosebumps-style stories
  6. Guided exploration of story ideas, supernatural threats and effective twist endings
  7. A separate, fully illustrated Creative Writing Booklet taking pupils step-by-step through:
  • choosing a story idea
  • creating an effective setting
  • developing characters
  • designing a monster, villain or supernatural threat
  • planning the beginning, middle, climax and resolution
  • writing a complete extended story
  • checking and improving the finished piece
  1. Extensive visual prompts, choices, writing frames and vocabulary support throughout

This unit works particularly well for:

  • engaging reluctant readers and writers through accessible horror stories
  • developing active listening and retrieval skills
  • supporting pupils who struggle to generate or develop their own ideas
  • teaching narrative structure and the conventions of horror fiction
  • building confidence before extended creative writing
  • supporting lower-literacy and mixed-ability BGE classes through clear, manageable scaffolding

Written for Scottish secondary classrooms, the pack is particularly suited to lower-BGE English and Literacy, with a strong emphasis on listening, understanding, discussion and imaginative writing. The progressive structure allows pupils to experience and analyse successful horror narratives before applying what they have learned to their own writing.

The two workbooks are designed to function as a complete sequence: pupils first watch, listen, respond and recognise how the stories work, before gradually moving towards independent planning and sustained creative writing.
