This is a double lesson suitable for older students studying Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” who have already been introduced to analysis. The lesson introduces definitions of ‘gothic’ and ‘horror’ and identifies one incident of horror in the book (the basement scene with the cannibals). Students are then assigned sections from the text and asked to work in groups, with guiding questions for independent analysis.
