Help your Grade 3 students master comparing texts the way RL.3.9 and RI.3.9 actually ask for it: compare and contrast two stories, or two texts on the same topic. This complete unit teaches students to find what two texts have in common and how they are different.

Students learn that comparing means finding what’s alike and contrasting means finding what’s different, how to compare two stories by setting, plot, and theme, and how to compare two texts on the same topic by their points and details. The keystone Compare + Contrast Statement brings naming a likeness with the word both and a difference with the word but into one reusable sentence students can use with any two texts.
