Help Primary pupils explore the groups and communities they belong to with this engaging PSHE and Social Studies lesson. Through mapping, movement, and role-play, children learn about belonging, diversity, and the important roles people play in their local communities. This lesson builds respect, inclusion, and social awareness in a fun, age-appropriate way.
Lesson Overview:
Starter Activity: Identity Circle – Pupils step into a circle if a statement applies to them (e.g., “I have a brother,” “I like football”), highlighting shared experiences and individuality.
Main Activities:
Create a Community Map showing local places, groups, and key people
Discuss what communities are and how they help us
Play the Our Community Helpers Matching Game to connect roles such as teacher, firefighter, or doctor
Role-play different community helper jobs
Make a “My Communities” Flower – each petal represents a group pupils belong to (family, class, sports club, neighbourhood)
Classroom Culture: Encourage respect and appreciation for all communities and backgrounds. Use inclusive language about families and lifestyles. Focus on shared belonging and kindness.
Assessment:
Community knowledge check – can pupils name and describe communities they belong to?
Evaluation of Community Maps for understanding of local groups and roles
Teacher observation of discussions and role-play engagement
