In this lesson, pupils will explore how Halloween and other autumn celebrations are marked in different countries and cultures around the world. They will learn that traditions, beliefs and celebrations can vary between countries, reflecting different histories, religions and cultural practices. Pupils will locate selected countries on a world map and investigate celebrations such as Halloween in the USA, traditional Halloween customs in Ireland, Día de los Muertos in Mexico and Obon in Japan.

Through photographs, information cards, maps and discussion, pupils will discover the different foods, decorations, activities and traditions associated with these celebrations. They will compare these with Halloween traditions in Scotland, identifying similarities and differences while developing their understanding of other cultures and ways of life.

Key learning questions:

  • How is Halloween celebrated in different countries?
  • What other celebrations take place around the same time of year?
  • How are these celebrations similar to or different from Halloween in Scotland?
  • Why is it important to understand and respect different cultural traditions?
