Teach pupils how to build a genuinely effective horror story with this complete KS3 Halloween Horror Writing Unit.

Rather than offering isolated creative-writing activities, this resource guides pupils through one structured horror story from first idea to final edit. Pupils develop their setting, character, atmosphere, tension, pacing, climax and ending before planning and writing a complete six-paragraph narrative.

The pack is designed for approximately 4–6 lessons, but can also be adapted for a shorter sequence or an extended Halloween writing session.

The resource includes:

  • 18-slide teaching PowerPoint
  • 14-page student writing workbook
  • 7-page teacher guide
  • structured planning activities
  • writing models and examples
  • differentiation ideas
  • assessment criteria
  • editing and reflection activities
Pupils work through a clear writing journey:
    Normality → Unease → Warning → Threat → Climax → Ending

Skills covered include:

  • creating atmosphere
  • developing believable characters
  • sensory description
  • showing rather than telling
  • building tension gradually
  • controlling sentence length and pacing
  • selecting precise vocabulary
  • withholding information
  • structuring paragraphs
  • writing an effective climax
  • crafting twist, reveal and unresolved endings
  • editing and improving writing
  • evaluating a finished piece

The student workbook takes pupils through idea generation, setting design, character creation, an opening paragraph builder, tension ladder, sentence and pacing practice, threat planning, a six-paragraph story plan, climax and ending planning, final checklist and reflection.

The teacher guide includes a suggested lesson sequence, guidance for teaching horror effectively, differentiation, assessment criteria and emergency writing prompts for pupils who become stuck.

The focus is on suspense, mystery, atmosphere and psychological tension rather than graphic violence, making it appropriate for classroom use.
