Back after half-term SEN Science, sorted: one shared creature-design lesson, four levels, real animal photos and very little writing.

Their creature. Your Science lesson.

Designed for SEN learners aged 11-14, working at foundational Early KS1 to KS2 levels. Pupils choose creature parts, select a habitat and share science at their own level. Pointing, speech, AAC, circling and adult recording are welcome.

Four levels within the same lesson

  • 1 | Early KS1: recognise one chosen body part; explore basic needs with support.
  • 2 | KS1: link one chosen feature to its job.
  • 3 | Early KS2: explain two feature functions and one habitat connection.
  • 4 | KS2: justify two features using real-animal examples and state one limit.

These labels describe learning demand, not chronological age.

Choose the route that suits your class

  • No-print restart: project and start; pupils point, speak or use their usual communication aid.
  • Minimal no-cut printing: one choice sheet plus one level sheet per pupil.
  • Optional cut-and-build: three rectangular strips form a creature portrait, with an extra-feature badge beside it.

Three faces x three body coverings x three feet/leg choices x three extra-feature badges = 81 combinations of choices. Drawing and handwriting are optional. Allow approximately 15 minutes for a short restart or 25-35 minutes with building and sharing; timings are estimates.

What’s included

  • 11-page teacher guide: quick-start routes, exact printing instructions, model answers, level goals, scientific limits, a finished card example and source/photo credits.
  • 14-page landscape display: creature choices, real-animal feature examples, habitats, care needs, sharing and an optional habitat-change extension. Internal navigation links are optional.
  • 12-page A4 printable pack: creature card, mix-and-match strips, shared extra-feature badges, habitat supports, real-photo science communication board, four level sheets, optional extension and teacher observation record.

Science focus: animal structures and functions, basic needs, habitat suitability and reasoned explanations. Links to the National Curriculum in England include Y1 structures, Y2 needs/habitats, Y4 environmental change and Y6 adaptations. This is a foundational SEN lesson, not a complete KS3 unit.

Please view the actual-page preview before purchasing. These are static PDFs, not an animated app. The creatures and example habitats are clearly imaginary illustrations; scientific real-animal references and care cues use authentic photographs. Photographs retain their credited licenses. The extra feature is represented by a badge, not an additional portrait strip. No licensed symbol system or franchise characters are included. Not classroom-tested; adapt the pace and communication supports to your pupils.
