Haunted Highlands synopsis:
Fishing enthusiast, Tommy, has some vacation time so he sends a letter to his friend Ronald, who lives in the highlands. Tommy has heard that the fish in the highlands are mighty bitey, so he is eager to fish there. Tommy treks through the pouring rain to the train station, but he doesn’t see anyone. The station manager said the rain is keeping everyone away and no one has shown up for many hours, including Ronald. Feeling let down, Tommy decides to hike through the rainy highlands to his friend Ronald’s place. The station manager warns Tommy about a reckless rider named Rabbie MacLaren who rides hard through those parts. Tommy takes notes and exits the station. As he walks, he sees a cart speeding towards him. Tommy shouts that he will pay the driver, so the cart slows down. Once Tommy boards the cart, he notices that the driver looks odd and he is speeding so fast, almost having a few accidents on the rainy road. Will Tommy be able to make it to Ronald uninjured or will he encounter Rabbie MacLaren and his wild horse?
Why didn’t Ronald meet Tommy at the station? Find out in the Haunted Highlands readers’ theatre unit!

Do not fear the reader’s theater format. Students love these adapted stories because they are listening to the story and they are a part of the story by playing a character within the story.

Reader’s theatre inspires reluctant readers to join in the fun. The strongest and most advanced readers in your class will encourage other students to raise their hand and participate in the story. I also use reader’s theatre to add to my drama marks.

I hope you, and your students enjoy reading Haunted Highlands and continue to do so for many years.

Excelsior!
