Great for group work at the start of the Henry VII topic, this interactive activity allows students to take on the role of the new king, facing three major issues at the start of his reign:

  • The Yorkist threat
  • The powerful nobility
  • The structure of government

For each issue, students are given three possible policy options. Working in pairs or small groups, they:

  1. Discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of each option.
  2. Decide which policy Henry VII should adopt.
  3. Explain and justify their decision to the class.

This activity encourages critical thinking, teamwork, and historical empathy by helping students understand the difficult decisions facing a new king after the Wars of the Roses.

Extension prompt: “How effective were Henry VII’s real choices in hindsight?”
