This is an integrated History/English unit of work I designed to accompany the Stage 2 History strand “Community and Remembrance.” This strand requires students to demonstrate an understanding of a significant event in Australian History and reflect on the importance of remembering these events. The unit specifically focusses on ANZAC Day and the landing at Gallipoli.

The text Gallipoli by Kerry Greenwood is used as a mentor text and as a quality literature link to the History unit, using narrative. I used this as a Shared Reading text over the course of one week.

Included in the unit is:

  • Syllabus Outcomes

  • History Inquiry Questions

  • A reflection on the Ode

  • A factual background to the Gallipoli landing

  • The Shared Reading component using Gallipoli, with detailed comprehension questions, including Visual Literacy elements

  • Suggested consolidation activities for after the text

  • A mini unit on food eaten by the diggers at Gallipoli (as referenced in the text)

  • A detailed recount of the life of John Simpson (of Simpson and his donkey, also referenced in the text)

Whilst the unit was designed for a Stage Two class, many of the components would also be relevant for a Stage Three classroom.
