Home Colourful Semantics – 12 Everyday Sentence Building Activities
A differentiated Colourful Semantics resource based around familiar activities and routines at home.
This 32-page resource contains 12 different sentences, supporting pupils to develop their understanding and use of sentence structure through the WHO? – DOING WHAT? – WHAT? – WHERE? framework.
The pack includes familiar home-based vocabulary and activities such as cooking dinner, brushing teeth, watching TV, playing with toys, eating breakfast, watering flowers, reading, washing dishes and folding clothes.
Each of the 12 sentences is supported through four differentiated options:
Cartoon images – colourful illustrated scenes with corresponding Colourful Semantics cards.
Real-life images – the same sentence structures represented using realistic imagery.
Symbol-supported cards – individual cards which can be cut out and used for matching, ordering and sentence building.
Text-only cards – reduced visual support for pupils progressing towards using written language more independently.
The resource can be used for sentence building, expressive language, vocabulary development, communication activities, matching and sequencing, speaking and listening, and early writing.
Pupils can also use the WHO? – DOING WHAT? – WHAT? – WHERE? structure to change elements of the example sentences and create their own sentences about home, allowing the level of support to be gradually reduced as confidence develops.
Ideal for SEND/SEN settings, autism provision, speech and language activities, intervention groups and differentiated English/literacy work.
Print the complete pages for ready-to-use activities or print, laminate and cut the individual cards for repeated use.
