This engaging and enquiry-based lesson explores the question: How powerful were medieval kings? Students investigate the different ways monarchs held power in the Middle Ages, as well as the key limitations they faced.

Learners begin by considering what makes someone powerful before analysing a range of statements about medieval kings. They categorise these into types of power (military, religious, economic, and legal) and evaluate which were most significant. Through scenario-based activities, students assess how secure a king’s power was in different situations, encouraging critical thinking and use of evidence.

The lesson culminates in a structured class debate, where students argue whether medieval kings were truly all-powerful, supported by sentence starters and scaffolding to develop historical reasoning.
