Students of all abilities struggle with not only how to approach the question but also to complete it within the expected timeframe – given it is only worth 8 marks.

I often advise students to do this question last if they are a student who runs out of time.

In mocks, some students miss this question out.

In this lesson, I will show it is still possible to get high marks for this question when running very low on time by writing just 5 sentences.

Many students are taught to write about this happens at the start, then this happens in the middle then this happens at the end.

These students often achieve 2 or 3 marks out of 8 because they are not seeing the bigger picture. In trying to write about the whole extract they end of saying very little of note.

They don’t think about what the writer is trying achieve across the whole extract.

Therefore I have developed a 5 sentence writing frame that allows students the opportunity to get into bands 3 and 4 of the markscheme in a much reduced time.

There are 3 examples I go through using the I do, we do, you do formula. Model answers are provided for all 3 extracts.
