Exam-style questions on algebraic methods for Edexcel IAL Pure 2 (WMA12): algebraic fractions, polynomial division, the factor theorem and proof, with full solutions.

This resource covers the whole of Chapter 1 (Algebraic Methods) of the Pearson Edexcel International A Level Pure Mathematics 2 course. All questions are original and written in the style of the WMA12 paper — these are not reproduced past paper questions.

What’s covered

Simplifying algebraic fractions by factorising
Dividing polynomials by a linear expression
The factor theorem, including finding unknown coefficients
Fully factorising a cubic using the factor theorem
Mathematical proof and the structure of a proof
Methods of proof: deduction, exhaustion and disproof by counter-example

How to use it

Works as homework, as consolidation across a short sequence of lessons, or as revision. The factor theorem section is weighted deliberately: it recurs throughout Pure 2 and Pure 3, and students who can quote the theorem but not use it to find an unknown coefficient lose marks on it every year.

What’s included

Question paper (PDF, printable)
Full worked solutions (PDF) — complete method, not just final answers
Questions arranged in increasing difficulty

Specification

Written for Edexcel International A Level Mathematics, Pure Mathematics 2 (WMA12), Chapter 1. Also suitable for Edexcel A Level Mathematics 9MA0 and for any A Level course covering the factor theorem and proof.
