Exam-style questions on correlation and regression for Edexcel IAL Statistics 1 (WST01): scatter diagrams, the PMCC and the regression line.

This resource covers the whole of Chapter 5 (Correlation and Regression) of the Pearson Edexcel International A Level Statistics 1 course. All questions are original and written in the style of the WST01 paper — these are not reproduced past paper questions.

What’s covered

Scatter diagrams, and describing the type and strength of correlation
Calculating the product moment correlation coefficient from summary statistics
Interpreting the PMCC in context
The least squares regression line, and the meaning of its gradient and intercept
Using the regression line to predict, and interpolation versus extrapolation
The effect of coding on the PMCC and on the regression line

How to use it

Works as homework, as consolidation across a sequence of lessons, or as revision before the WST01 paper. Explaining why a prediction is or is not reliable is asked for throughout, because it is a guaranteed mark and the one most often lost.

What’s included

Question paper (PDF, printable)
Full worked solutions (PDF) — complete method, not just final answers
Questions arranged in increasing difficulty

Specification

Written for Edexcel International A Level Mathematics, Statistics 1 (WST01), Chapter 5. Also suitable for Edexcel A Level Mathematics 9MA0 statistics content and for legacy S1 courses.
