IELTS Speaking Fluency & Coherence resource for tutors and self-study students who want clearer, more natural speaking without memorised answers or forced techniques.
Speaking fluently does not mean speaking fast, and coherence does not mean filling every answer with linking words. Module 5 of the IELTS Speaking Teaching System provides a practical framework for recognising what actually disrupts spoken communication and improving it systematically.
***For tutors and teachers, this module helps you diagnose specific fluency and coherence problems instead of simply telling students to “speak more.***” Identify excessive hesitation, restarting, repetition, filler dependence, weak recovery, disconnected ideas and rambling, then use focused activities to target the behaviour causing the problem.
For self-study students, the same diagnostic system can be used independently. Record your answers, identify one observable weakness, practise the specific skill, re-record and compare the evidence. Tutor guidance is included throughout and should also be used to understand what to listen for in your own speaking.
Inside Module 5:
• Understand what fluency and coherence actually mean
• Distinguish natural pauses from disruptive hesitation
• Reduce unnecessary restarting and repetition
• Recognise when fillers become a fluency problem
• Recover when words or ideas do not come easily
• Connect ideas naturally without memorised linking phrases
• Develop answers without rambling or losing relevance
• Use the GTA Fluency & Coherence Diagnostic Tool
• Compare weak and improved speaking behaviours
• Record, diagnose, improve and re-record responses
• Test improvement on unfamiliar Speaking questions
The focus is observable improvement, not self-awarded band scores. Students learn to identify what is interfering with communication, target one problem at a time and test whether the improvement transfers to new questions.
