IGCSE Physics: Core Practical — Investigating Heat Loss | Edexcel Modular | Unit 3 | L6

This lesson covers spec point 3.9 — investigating thermal energy transfer by
conduction, convection and radiation through a two-part practical investigation
into factors that reduce heat loss from a beaker of hot water.

PowerPoint includes:
• Retrieval starter reviewing conduction, convection and radiation from L3–L5
• Direct Instruction (I Do) — investigation introduced in two parts; variables
identified; control variable reasoning modelled; why only one variable can be
changed at a time explained; Part A (lid vs no lid) and Part B (insulating
materials) set up and demonstrated
• Guided Practice (We Do) — students identify independent, dependent and
control variables for each part; write a prediction with a scientific
justification before the practical begins
• Independent Practice (You Do) — students carry out both parts, record results
and complete the activity sheet analysis questions
• Review and Reflect — MCQs and exit ticket

Activity Sheet includes:
• Two clearly separated sections matching the two-part practical structure
• Part A results table (with lid / without lid, 0–10 minutes)
• Part B results table (bubble wrap / aluminium foil / no wrapping, 0–10 minutes)
• Part A questions: independent variable, control variables, describe pattern,
explain using convection
• Part B questions: independent variable, explain lid as control variable,
describe pattern, explain bubble wrap using conduction, explain foil using
radiation, justify best insulator using own data
• Full mark scheme for teacher use
