Initial Sound Recognition – Acorn Matching Game

8 A4 pages with 9 acorns per page, designed to support initial sound recognition through a fun matching game. Children match each acorn to its cap, matching the object to its initial sound.

The resource includes all Phase 2 single-letter sounds, plus j, v, w, z and y. Each sound has three matching words, for example: m – monkey, moth and mountain.

For larger, easy-to-handle pieces, the resource is best printed on A3. It can be set up as an enhancement in provision or used as a focused activity with an adult.

If a child finds initial sounds tricky, simplify the activity by focusing on one sound at a time with a smaller selection of pictures. For example, “Let’s find three words beginning with s.”

A hands-on resource for practising early phonics, developing initial sound recognition and building confidence with hearing the first sound in a word.
