Introduction to Linguistics - KS3

This dynamic and academically enriching Scheme of Work provides Year 9 students with a stimulating introduction to key concepts in linguistics. Spanning a half-term and comprising over 200 slides, the scheme is carefully structured to develop students’ understanding of how language functions, evolves and influences society.

Students begin by exploring Global English, examining how historical events — including the expansion of the British Empire — contributed to the widespread use and dominance of English worldwide. This foundation is complemented by an investigation into language attitudes, where students engage critically with the concepts of prescriptivism and descriptivism, positioning their own views along an attitude continuum and participating in structured debates.

The scheme incorporates relevant and engaging case studies, such as Singlish, roadman slang, and language death, encouraging students to consider diversity and change in language use. Building on this, students explore Language and Power, analysing the distinctions between institutional and influential power, identifying features of power in spoken interactions, and applying ideas such as Accommodation Theory to real-life and classroom transcripts.

A further focus on Language and Media develops students’ critical literacy skills, enabling them to explore how journalists shape audience interpretation through rhetorical devices and selective representation. Real-world examples — including media portrayals of public figures and significant events — provide meaningful and relevant contexts for analysis.

The scheme is highly interactive, incorporating a range of videos, discussion-based activities, debates, and analytical tasks, making complex linguistic concepts accessible and engaging. It provides strong preparation for AO2-style analysis, encouraging students to comment on language use with increasing confidence and precision.

The unit culminates in a group presentation assessment, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding through collaborative speaking and listening tasks, while developing their ability to articulate ideas clearly and respond thoughtfully to others.
