Introduction to Playreading | Complete Lesson Pack

In many classrooms, students encounter plays by being asked to “read the parts”, but are not always shown how playreading works. This lesson introduces students to the distinctive demands of reading a play, including dialogue, stage directions, cues, turn-taking and collaborative interpretation. Students explore what makes dramatic texts different from other forms of reading before taking part in their own structured table read.

Designed for Key Stage 3, this discussion-led and inquiry-based lesson helps students develop confidence, attention and understanding as readers of drama.

The lesson can be used as an introduction to playreading, as preparation for studying a class play, or as part of a wider reading skills programme.
