The film reviews the status of Irish indentured servants in the Americas: can they be considered as slaves? The question is controversial and this resource should only be used with caution, as just a part of the whole history of the use of enslaved people in the New World. This video offers a balanced assessment, but only considers the question with respect to Irish people.

The content covers: the Viking raids, the Hroomarsson Rebellion, Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, king of Meath frees Irish slaves. Normans in Ireland; Henry II and Laudabiliter, Alexander III grants Ireland to Henry II, “The Pale”. Slavery replaced by serfdom. James I and the Order of Banishment. 1612: Irish slaves sold, and taken to Brazil – slaves or indentured servants? Prices of African vs Irish slaves. 1641 Irish Rebellion. Cromwell’s treatment of the Irish. “To Hell or to Connacht”. Various Council of State declarations regarding Irish people in the colonies.
