This lesson could be part of a theme on health (and there are other resources in our shop which would complement it), a stand-alone lesson or part of a wider modern work experience opportunity, if combined with employer input from a nutritionist, chef or medical expert and the opportunity to complete the extension task at the end. The presentation allows for a hands-on approach to thinking about the importance of iron in the diet, especially given the recent findings “The Global Burden of Disease study, led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, puts iron deficiency anaemia as one of the top five causes of disability in women of reproductive age globally.” Moreover, according to The Guardian, “A recent UK study by Randox Health, a blood-testing and diagnostics company, found almost one in three women attending its clinics had absolute iron deficiency.” It looks at the issues with iron deficiency and what to do if experiencing symptoms. It also gives the opportunity, should you choose to pursue it, to look at why women’s health is less well funded and supported than male health. Teaching notes outline what you will need for your lesson and a second powerpoint includes printables for the tasks.
