Dear Colleague,
Step into the foggy streets of Victorian London, where mystery, fear, and social unrest intertwine — this lesson takes your students deep into the investigation of Jack the Ripper’s crimes between 1888 and 1891, challenging them to think like real detectives while analysing historical evidence.
This lesson is the second part of a three-lesson set, designed to help students connect general knowledge with original sources while strengthening their ability to answer GCSE-style questions.
All lessons follow the same structure to ensure consistency and clarity in students’ learning journey:
First slide: revision task, learning date, word bank, link to previous and next lesson, and an engaging image to introduce the topic.
Second slide: learning objectives and a key question on the main theme.
Main activities: three tasks arranged by difficulty. The third task always involves GCSE-style writing, while the first two are group or class-based investigations into the Ripper suspects. The final individual task invites students to form an informed opinion on the identity of the perpetrator, giving you the opportunity to circulate and support their written reasoning.
All resources are included at the end of the PowerPoint.
