1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach
My dear Reader,
Step back into the shadowy streets of Victorian London, where mystery and fear gripped the East End. This lesson is the first in a 3-part series exploring the crimes committed by Jack the Ripper between 1888 and 1891 — one of the most intriguing and chilling chapters in British history. Students will investigate the murders, the social context, and the historical evidence to develop their analytical and evaluative skills for the GCSE exam.
All lessons follow the same coherent structure, helping students clearly understand their learning journey:
First slide: revision task, date, word bank, links to previous and next lessons, and an evocative image to introduce the topic.
Second slide: learning objectives and a question on the main theme.
Three tasks: graded by difficulty. The first two focus on group or class-based investigations of the Ripper’s traits and the context of the crimes. The third task is an individual writing exercise aligned with the GCSE writing framework.
Extension task: encourages debate and deeper understanding of Victorian society and law enforcement.
The resource includes homework, reading materials, and task templates.
It is ideal for secondary students and ready to use as a slideshow presentation.
