This resource may be described as a children’s story or an allegory, by focusing on main parts of speech and core vocabulary including nouns, adjectives, adverbs, simple past tense verbs, verbal phrases, as well as word collocations and word formations. There are 11 integrated supplementary English as a second language (ESL) materials to help students increase their nautical and everyday vocabulary.

The story and the 11 supplementary ESL worksheets are constructed so that ESL/EAL/CELTA/TEFL and TESOL certified teachers have ready-made integrated lesson materials that culminates into discussion topics and a creative, larger student project.

The story and the supplementary ESL worksheets are a great launching off point to use the vocabulary in other social, everyday contexts; and help students go beyond the story and talk about issues related to personal resilience, courage, and the nature of relationships and social responsibility.

How to Use the ESL Materials/Worksheets
The resource includes a main story and 11 supplementary worksheets that are integrated with the story, “KOKO: The Brave Little Fish”. The packaged resource is for teachers who are looking for a creative and cohesive way to teach simple past verbs, verbal phrases, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, collocations, and word formations. The author has tested all of the worksheet activities. You will receive the following items:

  1. The full story text is titled, “KOKO: The Brave Little Fish”. The story is three (3) pages and 1,483 words. It takes nine (9) minutes to read. Each short paragraph is numbered so that students may easily search any word on all of the worksheets where all core vocabulary words have the corresponding number to the story. The plot is about a very colorful fish with special features who is swept away by a purple tide predicted to come by the ancients. All the fish are warned to hid in safe spaces, but KOKO does not hear this warning and gets swept away. He finds himself alone and lost. He meets a friendly seahorse who is a bit of a know-it-all; and together they have their adventures where KOKO finds his inner strength to get back home. A way to use this story is to read each paragraph, asking students what is happening; or read the whole story and have them write down what they think the plot was about; or review the vocabulary with them or in pairs before reading the story, giving the students a chance to use their e-dictionaries and to identify vocabulary they already know; or, preferably, complete one of
