Point One Fluency Pathways are designed to be plug-and-play intervention. Each week follows the same routine. No planning required. Simply print the pupil pack, open the slides and follow the routine to develop fluent, confident readers.

STEP 1
Step 1 of the Reading Fluency Pathway is designed for pupils who are accessing Year 3 reading materials but with effort and little fluency.

Step 1 includes multisyllabic words, sentences that use mostly coordinating conjunctions (with some light subordination) and fronted adverbials. This step includes explicit work on changing intonation depending on whether a sentence ends with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.

Included in the Step:

  • Pre and post assessment
  • Six fully planned teaching PowerPoints (1 per week. Each week includes 3x 15 minute sessions)
  • Printable pupil pack
  • Adult guidance
  • Games and practice activities

Point One Learning Pathways use a guided release learning model called Explore, Practise, Apply.

Each passage is taught over three 15 minute lessons that gradually move from high modelling and support in Explore to being able to independently perform their learning and transfer to a new text in Apply.

The 5–Point Fluency Routine is used to structure the learning in the Reading Fluency Pathway lessons:

Decode It : Children learn to break words into syllables to help them decode
**Phrase It: **Echo reading helps children improve phrasing, intonation, expression and when to pause
Extend It: Children build syntactic understanding, gradually extending sentences so they read with fluency and understanding
**Build It: **Children deepen their syntactic understanding alongside their fluency (and sentence building skills) by forming their own sentences based on the structural focus of the passage.
**Perform It: **Children perform their best, fluent reading applying the skills learned that week.

The pathway develops:

✔ reading accuracy
✔ phrasing and expression
✔ vocabulary
✔ sentence understanding
✔ reading confidence

while building background knowledge through National Curriculum history content.

Point One Fluency Pathways are suitable for:

  • KS2 intervention
  • Reading fluency groups
  • Guided reading
  • Catch-up
  • SEND
  • Dyslexia support
  • Reading leads
  • Teaching assistants
