A moving story. Meaningful discussion. Reading with purpose.
Help pupils explore the meaning of remembrance through A Poppy for Remembering, an original fictional diary following ten-year-old Oliver and his great-grandfather on a visit to London for Remembrance Sunday.
From sharing ginger biscuits on the train to standing quietly beside the parade route, Oliver’s observations bring warmth and a child’s perspective to an important subject. Pupils explore why we remember those who died in past conflicts and think about people serving today and families affected by war.
This illustrated lesson develops vocabulary, retrieval and inference, with opportunities to discuss feelings, explain ideas and support answers with evidence.
