Eight suspenseful extracts. One consistent Active Reading approach. A ready-made collection for developing confident, thoughtful readers.
This 8-resource KS2 Suspense Active Reading Bundle provides a collection of atmospheric extracts and accompanying teaching PowerPoints designed to develop comprehension while exploring how authors create suspense, tension and atmosphere.
Across the collection, pupils encounter a range of mysterious and suspenseful situations — from Varjak Paw creeping through a stormy street and a child caught in the terrifying chaos of a wartime air raid to isolated settings, mysterious forests, threatening characters, fantasy and eerie houses.
The resources use a consistent Active Reading structure, allowing children to become increasingly independent with familiar comprehension approaches while encountering a different text each time.
Across the bundle, children practise summarising and initial response; clarifying unfamiliar vocabulary; inference and evidence; prediction; visualisation; figurative language; authorial choice; retrieval; identifying suspense techniques; and explaining the effect of language on the reader.
Several resources explicitly teach pupils what it means to clarify, question and predict, including strategies such as sequencing information, reading between the lines and determining unfamiliar vocabulary through context.
The collection also creates a strong reading-to-writing link. Pupils encounter and analyse techniques such as rhetorical questions, short sentences, repetition, sensory description, similes and show-not-tell, helping them recognise the techniques they can later apply within their own suspense writing.
