Ks3 Chinese Music SoW and resources including full SoW outline, Powerpoint, instrument cards, China Town score, composition planning sheet and knowledge organiser. Knowledge organiser can be used for setting homework/cover/revision work.

This unit covers Chinese music, covering chinese culture, chinese instruments and the pentatonic scale. Tasks include, listening and appraising, singing, playing a chinese song on keyboard and composing. This unit is intended to be taught over 6 1 hour lessons by a music specialist but can of course be interpreted.

I teach this scheme at the end of Year 7 when students have some knowledge of reading music notation and composing but it could be taught at any stage of Ks3. I have found my Year 7s find this unit very interesting as they don’t always know a lot about Chinese culture! I believe it is really important we teach students about music from different parts of the world so they can learn about different cultures.
