Civil Rights in the USA SOW covering topics from the American Civil War to Black Power in the 1970s.
The aim of this scheme of work is to add wider context to the struggle for racial equality in the USA, examining the treatment of Black Americans throughout history and the progress that was made under specific individuals.

Please discuss the sensitivity of this topic with students and address the importance of the use of language.
Please explain that contemporary sources of this topic will use terms which are no longer acceptable today, however, omitting these terms can remove some level of historical accuracy and understanding.
The focus of this topic should be to celebrate the empowerment of the black community uniting to fight inequality across the USA, not to see them as victims.
